Our history

Charlton Jewellers is a family owned retail jewellery store that has operated on Auckland’s North Shore for over 35 years. The business was started by Roger Charlton, a fully qualified trade watchmaker, back in 1976 and operated from a tiny store in the Highbury shopping centre. It was originally a watch repair business with a smattering of clocks, watches and watchstraps for sale but grew very quickly as locals embraced the newcomer.

Shortly after, Roger’s wife Marion joined the business and the little shop was bursting with new jewellery and giftlines, including being an early stockist of Oroton meshware, although they’re still not quite sure how they managed to fit it all in!

Roger and Marion quickly realised that they both had a passion for jewellery and the business soon outgrew the little shop. They were able to take a much larger store just around the corner where they operated for a number of years (in fact it was often referred to as “Charltons Corner”). It was here they became stockists of many international brands including Swarovski Crystal, and also where they expanded their services with the addition of an on-site manufacturing jewellery workshop. The Charlton name became synonymous with quality diamond rings, jewellery and watches at good value prices, and still is to this day.

The Birkenhead store has moved twice more since, including spending a number of years in the new Highpoint shopping centre before finally relocating to the newly redeveloped mall at Glenfield when it was re-opened. During that time Roger and Marion also operated several other branches, at times 4 in central Auckland and 2 in the Milford shopping centre. They have made many good friends and gained loyal customers through their welcoming and friendly approach to people, outstanding service and unerring eye for great design, quality and value.

Daughter Sarah (now Sarah McMichael) joined her Mum and Dad at “Charltons Corner” over 20 years ago and now runs the business for them while they enjoy a very well earned retirement. Sarah has clearly inherited those traits that made her parents successful and with the support of an outstanding team is proud to continue the Charltons tradition from the beautiful newly refurbished Glenfield store.

Today Charlton Jewellers is a modern, contemporary business with a strong focus on individual design and manufacture of diamond rings and jewellery, at the same time maintaining good relationships with many well known jewellery and watch brands such as Evolve NZ, Thomas Sabo, Karen Walker, Swarovski and Tissot to name a few. It remains one of very few retail jewellery stores in Auckland that has a full manufacturing jewellery workshop on-site where you are actually able to see our jeweller Shayne at work.

We look forward to seeing you in store soon!

Phil has 25 years of experience in the trade, many years in the supply side being involved with gold & bullion, and has been with Charltons since 2003.

“After 25 years in the jewellery trade I still enjoy learning new things almost daily. Theres a great deal of satisfaction in being part of someone purchasing a ring that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. Away from the shop nothings more relaxing than sitting on the harbour with a line in the water or watching whatever sports on, no matter what shape the ball!”

Maria Tagle
Maria came to New Zealand with her family 16 years ago, and spent over half that time with Charlton Jewellers having worked with us since 2002. A very hard working staff member who loves jewellery and “everything else that sparkles and shines”. Maria is particularly fond of Swarovski (amongst other things) and she really is our “specialist” in this beautiful product. She lives with her husband, daughter and mum, and enjoys music, reading and shopping. She has been quite a good customer and advocate of Charltons jewellery over the years which you will no doubt notice if you pop in to the store!
